FA Cup 2022-23 Q3 Rd Preview

80 clubs are competing for the opportunity to face a Step One National League side in the next round of the FA Cup.

Among them are 13 clubs that started their 2022-23 campaign in the Extra Preliminary Round. Seven of those are from Step Five, the highest number of clubs from that level in this round for five years. And two of them go head-to-head as United Counties League Premier North side Anstey Nomads host Shefford Town and Campton from Spartan South Midlands League Premier, with neither side ever having been this far in the competition before.

Shefford Town are in their debut campaign and they, alongside North West Counties League Premier side Bury AFC, are the last two debut clubs standing. Another North West Counties League side Congleton Town are the lowest ranked club left in the competition.

Essex Senior League side Romford FC have made it this far in the FA Cup for the first time this century and they host familiar opponents in the shape of Chelmsford City who had a five to one win ratio against a previous Romford club in the Cup.

After a terrific three step cupset in the last round Northern League side Ashington FC are in 3rd Qualifying Round for the first time in 12 years, whilst Helston Athletic of the Western League are making their first appearance in this round and are only the tenth club from Cornwall to make it this far in the competition.

Of the Step Four clubs that started in the EP Round, Beckenham Town will host Binfield FC in a tie that will guarantee a first ever appearance in the 4th Qualifying Round for the winner. Hanley Town, Sevenoaks Town and Three Bridges would all achieve the same feat in they won their respective 3rd Qualifying Round ties, whilst Stocksbridge Park Steels would equal their best run.

Walton and Hersham not only started their campaign in the EP Round, but they are also the current top scorers in the competition with 17 goals, and they travel to National League South side Taunton Town to try to add to that tally.

Only eight ties involve clubs that have met in the FA Cup before and Marske United have beaten South Shields on all three previous clashes, including a 3-0 win just last season. However, Gainsborough Trinity versus Worksop Town is happening for the thirteenth time. Trinity are ahead by nine wins to three, but the Tigers won 4-0 in their last meeting in the Cup 21 years ago.

The fact of the round involves Hemel Hempstead Town who, in their 232nd FA Cup game and 102nd FA Cup campaign, finally get to face an opponent beginning with the letter ‘P’, as they travel to Peterborough Sports.
