2015/16 FA Cup 2nd Round Preview

  1. Bradford City (League 1) vs Chesham United (Southern League Premier) – Unsurprisingly it’s the first FA Cup meeting between the two side as The Generals are into the 2nd Round for only the second time.
  2. Barnet (League 2) vs Newport County (League 2) – 1st FA Cup meeting between the two sides since Newport County re-formed, although Barnet did beat original Newport County in 1st Round 1970/71 in one of the biggest ever non-league victories over a league side. Newport equalling best ever Cup run since re-forming by being in 2nd Round whilst Barnet has not gone beyond this round in eight years.
  3. Peterborough United (League 1) vs Luton Town (League 2) – The two clubs met in the 3rd Round of the 1982/83 season when The Hatters, a top flight club that season, won 3-0 against Peterborough who were then playing in Division Four.
  4. Portsmouth (League 2) vs Accrington Stanley (League 2) – The two clubs have never met in the FA Cup before, although Pompey met the previous incarnation of Accrington Stanley twice, winning on both occasions. Portsmouth won their first FA Cup match since a Semi Final win over Tottenham in 2010, the same season last made it beyond the 2nd Round on their way to a personal best Cup run of the 4th Round. (Even the original Accrington Stanley only made it as far as the 4th Round).
  5. Stourbridge (Northern Premier League Premier) vs Eastleigh (National League) – History will be made for one of these two non-league clubs meeting in the FA Cup for the first time, as neither has made it beyond the 2nd Round in the past. The Spitfires beat League opposition for the first time in this year’s 1st Round and have matched last season’s record run in the competition. The Glassboys are competing in the FA Cup for the 111th time and this will be the third year in the last five when they’ve had a chance to make it to the 3rd Round. Stevenage stopped them on both their previous two occasions.
  6. Northampton Town (League 2) vs Northwich Victoria (Northern Premier League 1st North) – Northwich Victoria are the lowest ranked team left in this year’s competition, from the 8th tier, and the 2nd Round tie will be their 7th of this year’s competition, one more than the eventual winners are likely to play. This is the First FA Cup meeting between the two sides, both of whom last went beyond the 2nd Round 10 years ago. Both have a best Cup run of reaching the 5th Round although when The Vics achieved it, it equated to reaching the Quarter Finals.
  7. Exeter City (League 2) vs Port Vale (League 1) – One previous meeting between the two clubs, a 1st Round tie in 1952/53 won 3-1 by Port Vale. The Grecian have not gone beyond 2nd Round in 11 years.
  8. Cambridge United (League 2) vs Doncaster Rovers (League 1) – The teams met in the 3rd Round of the 1981/82 season when the lower league Doncaster ran out 2-1 winners. If Cambridge keep up their current short term FA Cup sequence they will make the Quarter Finals this year having gone two rounds further than the previous year in each of the last two seasons.
  9. Grimsby Town (National League) vs Shrewsbury Town (League 1) – Just one previous meeting in the FA Cup when The Mariners won a 1st Round replay 4-0 in 1997/98, but in those days Grimsby were the higher league side.
  10. Yeovil Town (League 2) vs Stevenage (League 2) – The two clubs have never met in the FA Cup before. Both clubs best ever Cup runs took them to the 5th Round, Yeovil famously in 1948/49 season when, as a non-league club, they caused what many consider to be the greatest ever FA Cup shock by beating Division One side Sunderland in the 4th Round. Stevenage made the 5th Round just four seasons ago.
  11. Rochdale (League 1) vs Bury (League 1) – This will be the fourth time these two Lancashire clubs will have met in the FA Cup. The Shakers hold a 2 to 1 lead in terms of Cup victories, but Rochdale won their last encounter 12 years ago. Bury hasn’t been beyond the 2nd Round for eight seasons whilst The Dale have made it as far as the 4th Round in each of the last two years.
  12. Welling United (National League) vs Carlisle United (League 2) – The clubs have never met in the FA Cup before, unsurprisingly given that this is only the 5th time The Wings have made it this far and the fact they have only gone one round further on one of those occasions, way back in 1989.
  13. Leyton Orient (League 2) vs Scunthorpe United (League 1) – These two clubs have never met in the FA Cup before, made all the more surprising given that they have 199 FA Cup campaigns between them.
  14. Millwall (League 1) vs Wycombe Wanderers (League 2) – Just one previous FA Cup meeting between the two clubs, a 2nd Round clash in 2000/01 won by the Chairboys 2-1 after a replay. Interestingly, this was also the last time The Lions were knocked out of the FA Cup in the 2nd Round. However, it’s five years since Wycombe went beyond the 2nd Round.
  15. Colchester United (League 1) vs Altrincham (National League) – This will be the first FA Cup meeting between the two clubs. It’s 14 years since The Robins were in Round Two and a further seven years since they appeared in the 3rd Round.9
  16. Chesterfield (League 1) vs Walsall (League 1) – These two clubs have met six times in the FA Cup with The Saddlers winning five of them. The Spireites only victory came in an Intermediate Round clash in the 1900/01 season, the first time the clubs faced each other. However, it’s eight years since Walsall went beyond the 2nd Round.
  17. Sheffield United (League 1) vs Oldham Athletic (League 1) – Just one previous FA Cup meeting between the two sides, 101 years ago, a 4th Round match won 3-0 by The Blades after a goalless draw. Sheffield United has gone beyond the 2nd Round every year since 1981/82.
  18. Salford City (Northern Premier League Premier) vs Hartlepool United (League 2) – This is the first meeting in the Cup between the two sides as The Ammies had never made the 1st Round in their previous 25 FA Cup campaigns and The Pool have always been a League side in all that time. Making the 2nd Round is already a three round improvement for Salford versus their previous efforts and the omens to make the 3rd Round are good given Hartlepool have exited at this stage in each of the last 2 seasons, last year to a club from the same Division as Salford.
  19. Dagenham and Redbridge (League 2) vs Whitehawk (National League South) – First FA Cup meeting between the two sides as Hawks into the 2nd Round for the first time ever in what is their 34th campaign. Daggers into the 2nd Round for first time in four years.
  20. Oxford United (League 2) vs Forest Green Rovers (National League) – First FA Cup meeting between the sides. Forest Green last beyond 2nd Round six years ago.
